It can be sad or heartbreaking, but it can also be luminous and joyous. It does also happen to be an adaptation that should delight fans of the books because it generally knows exactly how much or how little to deviate from its source material to adapt to the constraints (and liberations) of episodic television. The creep factor is important (and occasionally actually scary or super gory), but it acts as an almost funny juxtaposition to the otherwise happy-go-lucky look at suburban life. She might be the key to why Debra, a successful and smart business woman, is so gullible when it comes to love—with devastating consequences. Little did we know that this was only the beginning of a tragic and hilarious tale that would start to take on the scope of an epic Russian novel. Supernatural is a mainstay in American television. The two men at the heart of the show are best friends and total opposites—one is a straight white hippy, the other is black, gay, conservative—and they support each other, joke and fight like brothers. Tragedy and fantasy engage in a complicated dance in Scott Frank’s scripts, as Beth is fed (and quickly develops an addiction to) tranquilizers as an eight-year-old child, something that opens her mind up but (obviously) plagues her throughout her young adult life. All three seasons are currently streaming. The bottom line is that it’s just good. One is the casting of five relatively unknown actors to play the boys. This show isn’t for everyone, but if you’re looking for a comfort blanket of a reality show, it’s definitely for you. The investigation leads to a pharmaceutical company in Dusseldorf, and the detectives seek help from their German colleagues. The name was a bit of a non-controversy when Netflix first announced the show in 2017, especially since the show is based on a film of the same name first released without any major internet controversies in 2014, but regardless, the show itself is truly excellent. At the start of the show, their husbands—played here by Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston—leave their wives after announcing they’ve fallen in love with each other, leaving the two women to deal with their incoming divorces with each other. Jessica (Krysten Ritter) is a super-powered private eye who mostly wants to be left alone. —Alexis Gunderson, Created by: Melissa Rosenberg Stars: Krysten Ritter, David Tennant, Rachael Taylor, Mike Colter, Carrie-Anne Moss, Eka Darville, Erin Moriarty, Wil Traval, Susie Abromeit Original Network: Netflix, Marvel’s first team-up with Netflix, 2015’s excellent Daredevil, took the shiny Marvel Cinematic Universe and rubbed much needed dirt on it. From the creator of cult TV classics like Andy Richter Controls the Universe and Better Off Ted comes Santa Clarita Diet. The Society, Netflix’s high-tech, aged-up take on Lord of the Flies, manages the trick with a simple bus ride. Anchored by outstanding performances, like the original series, Narcos: Mexico is a deeply compelling dramatization of the drug gangs that continue to plague Mexico (and to some extent, the United States) today, and concludes with a major reveal that sets up a whole new game for Season 2. By expanding on the Norman Bates story, Bates Motel has taken an iconic character and enriched him with a haunted history that makes him even more fascinating as we watch his descent into madness. Rectify is thought-provoking and will make you care about the future of its characters—like all the best shows do. Of course, everybody in town has a secret, and no one takes kindly to the mounting media attention. Don’t let it fool you, though, because the name change was a good way to get new viewers onto this excellent love story about a man going back through his romantic history to figure out where it all gone wrong (and, well, also to let his past lovers know about a certain health concern). Bobby and Karamo shine as the most cogent speakers and help establish the relationships needed for anyone’s heart to truly change. Over the last few years, the true crime genre has seen something of a renaissance in popular culture. The show takes place at fictional Seattle Grace Hospital, following the life and career of Meredith Grey from her time at the hospital as an intern, who eventually becomes a resident and rises through the ranks through the hospital. Jessica Jones furthers the trend with a psychological thriller that is, somehow, more brutal and dark than its Hell’s Kitchen contemporary. From there things become more sprawling (and arguably less compelling), but still binge-worthy. Starring Logan Browning as college-radio host Samantha White (the name of the show comes from her radio program, something that manages to get her into some serious hot water), the entire cast here is excellent, as is the cinematography and editing. Charlie Brooker might be best known as a presenter and broadcaster on British television, but Brooker is also the creator of one of the best science-fiction shows on television. But their love for their children is never in doubt. For another, Carmen Sandiego, which in its newest Netflix iteration takes the red-coated thief of Millennial viewers’ youths and transforms her into a kind of modern-day, glob-trotting Robin Hood, isn’t just any artistically daring animated family series—it’s one that boasts the exact kind of high-stakes, adrenaline-drenched narrative structure that all good “choose your own adventure” stories need. Mainly, though, it’s the friendships and coming-of-age stories, the relationships and family bonding, that really make Stranger Things great. The six-episode series focuses on the nine months leading up to the 1993 raid and its horrifying aftermath. Fitting into a middle ground of sensibilities between occupational comedies like NewsRadio and the sly navel-gazing of Dead Like Me, The Good Place is the rare show that’s completely upfront about its main character’s flaws, creating a moral playground that tests Eleanor’s worst impulses at every turn. After getting lost in a storm, he reawakens 100 years later, only to learn that the Fire Nation has waged war against the rest of the world, and the hope of the free world rests in his hands. The show is fun to watch, emotionally satisfying and thought provoking. Fast forward to the present time, when the six surviving members of the clan reunite upon the news of Hargreeves’ passing. Four seasons are currently streaming on the service; the show was abruptly cancelled at the end of season five, which has yet to arrive on Netflix. There are also a host of political, racial, and social implications to the murder that are all given full consideration by the whip-smart dialogue, elevating this series into a thoughtful, compelling work. Sorry nitpickers and network executives; Kimmy Schmidt is going to make it after all. Sally Wainwright’s series can take soapy twists and turns, but it’s always anchored by outstanding performances from the four leads and a cozy sense of home (home meaning either the posh side of the family or the farmer side, depending). Netflix’s binge model is used to its full-effect, each episode’s conclusion begging the viewer to let the train roll on.
