WebSPOILER Thoughts on NTN [Discussion] I just finished up Nona The Ninth and I greatly enjoyed it, despite some issues with pacing at the start I liked the characters they introduced, particularly Nona herself and the various supporting characters along with the depictions of the returning characters. She lives with her family, has a job at her local school, and loves walks on the beach and meeting new dogs. our present in book three, possibly because Harrowhark has astral-projected herself into the past and has to figure out a way back to her timeline.). While Gideon finds a way to turn that betrayal briefly into a transcendent sacrifice, the power dynamics of her relationship with Harrow add an icky kind of subtext to that sacrifice. And again, thats something that theyre all made to be hinting at: bigger ideas that Harrow hasnt even quite been able to figure out herself. All of which combines to make Harrow the Ninth, for me, a richer book than Gideon the Ninth, but one that is also much harder to love. Enemies to Lovers is a classic romantic trope, the basis of everything from Pride and Prejudice to this years Netflix series Never Have I Ever. It is honestly one of the best books I have ever read about dissociation. Oddly enough, for as little as I understood anything going on in the mythos of Harrow which essentially tries to reimagine every heavy metal album cover as a redesign of a Lisa Frank original (Im going to find the right comparison point sooner or later) the world-building felt majestic to me. Theres a compelling argument to be made that the relationship between Harrow and Gideon is too toxic to root for or romanticize, and thats one of the major critiques Ive seen of the whole Locked Tomb trilogy. And in fact, in the mythology, its not meant to be romantic at all, but it inevitably has that shaded into it. Gideon Nav orphaned girl, ward of the Ninth House, smart and mean and bad-ass from shades to bones lives in that line. WebGideon the Ninth starts off a little slow but picks up steam steadily, becoming increasingly multi-layered and compelling as it propels the reader toward an intense, heart-pounding WebIn Gideon the Ninth, the necromancers all have enormous power over their cavaliers, and Harrow, the necromancer to whom our protagonist Gideon is indentured, has more All of which is to say that I am absolutely here for the bag of tricks in this book, and perhaps most especially that long extended spree of fanfiction tropes we get as the script Harrow was running in her own brain to hide Gideons existence from herself starts to break down. Not that there are tons of opportunities for laughter to begin with here. Harrow the Ninth is a trickier book than Gideon the Ninth, in the same way that bitchy, conniving Harrow is a trickier protagonist than sweet basic jock Gideon. And Gideon is a smart, foul-mouthed, queer swordfighter with a skull painted on her face, and the inside-her-brain POV that Muir has chosen here means we get full access to every panting, furious, childish, bloodthirsty and impure thought that crosses Gideon's mind which is fantastic, because I wanted to be her best friend by the end of the first page anyway, and everything that came after was just candy. They feel trapped in a narrative you understand intimately. WebGideon the Ninth is too funny to be horror, too gooey to be science fiction, has too many spaceships and autodoors to be fantasy, and has far more bloody dismemberings than I loved, for instance, the episodes of Lost where the main characters suddenly discovered they were trapped in the middle of a great game played out between immortal brothers who represented good and evil.
